All three cores are enclosed in a water-resistant PVC outer sheath (IS 5831:1984 Type ST2). The flat profile is retained by the sheath geometry, enabling passage through standard 100mm bore casing.

Avoid joints between the motor and the starter panel. If the run is insufficient, replace the entire length to prevent water-ingress at high hydrostatic pressure.

Maintain a minimum bending radius of 6× the major axis (flat width). Tighter bends can fatigue the ST2 sheath and compromise the moisture barrier.

Voltage Drop Verification
For borewells exceeding 150m, perform a voltage-drop check. Conductor resistance (Ω/km) increases with temperature; select size to limit drop to <5%.

Motor Frame Earthing Protocol

What is the difference between 3-core flat and round submersible cable for borewells?

This low-profile design reduces the risk of mechanical snagging and sheath abrasion during installation and pump retrieval, and simplifies securing the cable alongside the riser pipe. It is an installation-handling preference, not a separate electrical certification class.

Can flat submersible cable be installed directly underground between the borewell and the pump panel?

Standard flat submersible cable to IS 694:2010 is designed for immersion inside borewell casings, not for unprotected direct burial in soil. The PVC insulation resists water and abrasion but provides no mechanical armour against soil pressure, stones, or rodent attack.

If the cable must traverse an underground section between the borewell head and the pump control panel, route it inside a protective duct or conduit. Consult your installation standard for specific burial protection requirements.
