BIS IS 17048:2018 IS 8130:2013 Class 5 1100V AC IEC 60332-1 CE Marked ISO 9001:2015 RoHS Compliant

LSZH is a categorically different product from FR-LSH. It contains absolutely zero halogen in the compound. In a fire, it produces negligible smoke and zero corrosive acid gas. Mandated for metro rolling stock, nuclear facilities, data centres, and any environment where secondary chemical damage from combustion is unacceptable.

FR-LSH vs LSZH — why it matters: FR-LSH uses a halogen-limited PVC compound (reduced halogen). LSZH uses a fundamentally different Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) polyolefin compound. Specify LSZH wherever halogen acid gas evolution is strictly prohibited by building code or international export mandates. Full comparison: FR vs FR-LSH vs LSZH →

Dimensional and Electrical Data

National Cables holds the BIS License for IS 17048:2018 up to 10mm². This ensures full regulatory compliance for residential and commercial infrastructure. For industrial projects requiring larger cross-sections (up to 240mm²), we manufacture custom OEM solutions to the same HFFR safety standards.

90°C thermal rating — higher headroom than 70°C PVC. IS 17048:2018 Halogen-Free Polyolefin (HFFR) is rated for 90°C continuous conductor temperature versus 70°C for typical IS 694:2010 PVC-insulated wiring. That extra thermal margin supports higher current capacity per size and better performance when ambient temperature rises.

HFFR 90°C vs PVC 70°C at elevated temperature:

Example: 10mm² HFFR in conduit (2 cables, 1φ) = 42A at 30°C per table above. At 45°C: 42 × 0.87 ≈ 37A. Equivalent 70°C PVC reference at 45°C: 42 × 0.79 ≈ 33A. The 90°C HFFR insulation retains higher usable capacity at elevated ambient than 70°C PVC for the same tabulated reference current.
Cable Construction

Thermoplastic HFFR Compounding.

Unlike standard wires that use Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), LSZH wire is extruded with a Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) compound. It contains absolutely zero chlorine, fluorine, or bromine. National Cables ensures the consistency of this compound to guarantee zero-halogen properties on every drum.

Frequently Asked Questions

LSZH / HFFR wire — technical questions answered.

Common questions from metro rail specifiers, data centre procurement teams, airport MEP consultants, and fire safety engineers specifying halogen-free cable to IS 17048:2018.

What is the difference between LSZH and HFFR cables?

LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) and HFFR (Halogen Free Flame Retardant) describe essentially the same cable category using different terminology. LSZH is the more common international term, while HFFR is the formal designation used in Indian Standards.

IS 17048:2018 covers HFFR cables up to 1100V, including both 70°C thermoplastic and 90°C crosslinked compounds. Both terms refer to cables whose insulation contains zero halogen (no chlorine, fluorine, or bromine) and emits minimal smoke and acid gas during combustion.

National Cables manufactures HFFR cable under BIS licence CM/L-8800227819 for IS 17048:2018.

Why is IS 17048:2018 required for modern public infrastructure?

IS 17048:2018 is the Indian Standard specifically for HFFR cables and is regulated under the Cables (Quality Control) Order 2020 issued by the DPIIT — making compliance mandatory for manufacturing, import, and sale of HFFR cables in India.

Public infrastructure such as metro systems, airports, hospitals, tunnels, and data centres concentrates people and equipment in enclosed spaces where halogen acid gas and dense smoke from standard PVC would be lethal. IS 17048:2018 ensures strict limits on flame propagation, smoke density, and zero halogen emission to protect life and sensitive infrastructure.

What is the difference between zero halogen and low halogen?

Zero halogen cables (LSZH / HFFR to IS 17048:2018) use polyolefin compounds containing no chlorine, fluorine, or bromine. Halogen acid gas emission must be less than 0.5% tested per IEC 60754-1, with pH greater than 4.3 per IEC 60754-2.

Low halogen cables (FR-LSH to IS 694:2010) still use PVC-based compounds with halogen content reduced through formulation additives, typically permitting HCl emission up to around 20%.

In the Indian regulatory framework, zero-halogen falls under IS 17048:2018 and low-halogen under IS 694:2010 FR-LSH category.

Does LSZH cable have the same current-carrying capacity as PVC?

Not exactly — it depends on the specific HFFR compound. IS 17048:2018 covers both 70°C thermoplastic (HFI-TP 70) and 90°C crosslinked (HFI-XL 90) compounds.

The 90°C rated HFFR variants often permit higher current capacity than 70°C PVC (IS 694:2010) at the same conductor size, because the thermal headroom allows more heat dissipation before insulation limits are reached.

Exact current ratings depend on conductor size, installation method, ambient temperature, and grouping factors — always reference the manufacturer's technical datasheet for your specific installation conditions.
