Type D (85°C HR) insulation provides a higher thermal threshold than standard PVC — specified for dense control panels where ambient temperature rise from adjacent equipment is a design factor. For FR-LSH rated environments (OI >29%, HCl <15%), see our FR-LSH Single Core Wire.
Technical Specifications

Core configuration, ampacity & de-rating — IS 694:2010

Control cables are specified in the 0.5–2.5mm² control-duty range. Per-core current ratings are at 30°C ambient for thermal reference — each circuit is normally fused or MCB-protected well below these limits. For 85°C HR-PVC (Type D), apply the ambient de-rating factors after the ampacity table.

Base: 30°C ambient. Indicative factors for 85°C HR-PVC Type D — verify with engineering for formal design calculations.
How to apply: Multiply the tabulated current rating by the factor for your installation's ambient temperature.

Example: 1.5mm² control cable clipped direct = 17A at 30°C. At 45°C ambient: 17 × 0.85 = 14A.

Particularly relevant for industrial buildings, rooftop cable runs, and locations in North and Central India where summer ambient temperatures regularly exceed 40°C.

1
Class 5 Fine-Stranded Copper Conductors
Multiple fine copper strands per core, Class 5 per IS 8130:2013. Fine stranding allows routing through tight conduit and ensures the cable lies flat in cable trays without kinking at bends — important in crowded control panel environments.
2
Numbered Black Core Insulation
Each core is individually extruded with Black Type D (85°C) PVC insulation and marked with high-resolution inkjet sequential marking (white on black) for traceability on assembly lines. Numbering eliminates the limitations of color-coding in high core-count panels.
3
Grey ST3 Outer Sheath
All cores are bundled and protected by a robust Grey ST3 outer sheath per IS 5831. This industrial-grade jacket provides superior resistance to mechanical wear and environmental factors, distinguishing control duty circuits from standard power cables. 500m–1000m wooden drums support OEM automated machine harnessing and long continuous pay-off.
Engineering Advantages

Why control cable is the correct specification for command and signal circuits.

Control cables are specified for their electrical isolation, mechanical robustness, and unambiguous core identification — not continuous current capacity.

High Conductor-to-Conductor Isolation
Individual core insulation provides high resistance between adjacent conductors — critical for preventing crosstalk on 4–20mA signal loops and digital I/O circuits where adjacent conductor leakage can cause false triggering.

Type D (85°C) Thermal Safety
Heat Resistant (HR) Type D PVC insulation within our BIS licence scope. Provides a higher thermal threshold for high-density control panels where temperature rise from adjacent equipment is a factor.

High Core Count Availability
Available up to 24 cores — enabling a single cable to carry all I/O signals from a field junction box back to a DCS or PLC marshalling cabinet. Pair with 500m–1000m wooden drum put-ups for high-volume OEM automated machine harnessing programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Industrial control cable — technical questions answered.

Common questions from panel builders, DCS/PLC system integrators, EPC procurement teams, and industrial automation specifiers selecting multicore control cable for industrial installations.

What is the voltage rating for industrial control cable?

National Cables' industrial control cable to IS 694:2010 is rated up to and including 1100V AC. The cable is factory-tested at 3kV for 5 minutes per IS 694 requirements.

This voltage classification is more conservative than typical European 300/500V control cables (YY / IEC 60227-7), providing significant headroom for mixed power and signal circuits in industrial panels.

For specific voltage class confirmation for export projects, refer to the designation printed on the sheath or request the product datasheet.

Does the cable have numbered cores for termination?

Yes. Our multicore industrial control cable uses numbered core identification, with white printing on black PVC insulated cores for easy sequential termination. Cables with three or more cores include a green/yellow protective earth conductor in the outer layer.

This numbering system simplifies panel wiring and reduces termination errors in high-density control installations. Specific core identification schemes can be confirmed from the product datasheet for your ordered core count (2 to 24 cores stock, up to 61 cores made-to-order).

Do you offer an LSZH version for high-density control racks?

Yes. For high-density control racks, server rooms, or enclosed environments where halogen-free performance is specified, we manufacture HFFR/LSZH multicore control cable to IS 17048:2018 under BIS licence CM/L-8800227819.

These cables use halogen-free polyolefin insulation with HCl emission below 0.5%, suitable for data centres, metro control rooms, and public infrastructure where corrosive fire by-products must be avoided.

Contact our technical team for stock availability and made-to-order lead times for specific core counts.

Can this cable be used on drag chains or energy chains?

No. Standard industrial control cable to IS 694:2010 is designed for fixed installation or occasional flexing, not continuous repeated flexing.

Drag-chain and energy-chain applications require cables specifically designed for dynamic movement, typically using Class 6 conductors and specialised sheath compounds engineered for repeated flex cycles. Using a fixed-installation cable in drag-chain service will cause premature conductor fatigue and sheath failure.

For drag-chain requirements, specify a purpose-designed high-flex cable.
